Reading/Watching/Playing
Jul. 29th, 2022 02:20 pmReading:
Finished the 22 Murders of Madison May. Good stuff.
Read The Angel of Crows by Katherine Addision. This is an over Holmes derivative supernatural detective book. Highly derivative. It rewrites A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four and the Hound of the Baskervilles, while interleaving a Jack the Ripper variant. pretty poor. I struggled to finish it.
There's a new Alastair Reynolds, but I fancied a palate cleanser of a cross-genre mix first so I'm now partway through his Aurora Rising (also published as The Prefect) and will also read "Elyisum Fire" before moving on to Eversion.
Watching:
Finished my re-watch of The Magicians. Still one of my favourite shows. In a re-watch rather than new stuff mood mostly at present so started a re-watch of 12 Monkeys. Another solid medium-length series. I see new elements of the foreshadowing and complex advance plotting they did with this from the start. I'm so glad they got to finish the story off properly. Also started Moonhaven. Intresting concept. Don't interrogate some of the economics/tech limitations too hard and it's a fun mix of police procedural and socio-tech. Some nice lines like "tech means nothing without culture" which fit with the work I do.
Still watching Once Upon a Time with $DAUGHTER. Now up to completely new stuff (just started Season 4). Also watching some animated stuff with her. Finished the first season of "Supernatural Academy". Nice, light supernatural teen stuff. Started Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight and Dragons: The Nine Realms with her as well.
Forced the family to watch the Branagh Much Ado About Nothing on a movie night recently. I enjoyed it anyway. $DAUGHTER laughed at some bits but is resisting this kind of cultural stuff ("I just like fantasy"). She's disappointed that I won't let her watch Supernatural or 12 Monkeys yet. Complains when I explain they're really good but not yet suitable. Also watched Jurassic World 3. Fun but not particularly memorable. Nice bringing back of the original Jurassic Park characters, though $WIFE was convinced the sientist Dr Henry Wu had been killed in one of the original trilogy. They're saying this is the last movie, and it does complete the JW trilogy. Too lucrative a franchise for Hollywood to leave it alone, though. Expect another one some time, though maybe a break for a few years.
Playing:
Keeping on with Ring-Fit Adventure to try and get some exercise. Not managing to lose weight with it, though. So hot outside it's hard to get the motivation to go swimming. Binge-watching TV rather than playing lately.
