I've been very quiet on here recently as things have been very busy, so here's a quick update on things.
I now own Schroedinger's house: I've accepted an offer on my current place and had an offer accepted on a new one. Contracts haven't been exchanged yet - I had some delays in sorting out a mortgage, but hopefully I'm beyond them now. The new place is slightly bigger though not too much more expensive. I'm staying in Reading and haven't changed jobs or anything, but I was fed up with the commute to work. The new place is about fifteen minutes walk from my office so I'll get half an hour's exercise a day and reduce my travel time by anything up to an hour. I'm hoping to move in June, as there's no chain apart from me (first time buyers below and a "merging household" above).
The other major news, which those of you who saw me at Eastercon will have heard, is that I will almost certainly be visiting Meiji University in Tokyo from January to September next year. I'm still working on the details but I have the invitation to go from Kiyoshi MURATA there and the informal agreement of my Head of School at The University of Reading. I'm waiting on agreeing the work plan with Murata-sensei before applying for funding and for formal permission to take the sabbatical. I'll be working with Murata-sensei and his PhD student Yohko Orito on legal and social attitudes to privacy of electronic data, comparing Asian, European and American attitudes and laws with particular reference to Japan and the UK.
