I picked up the second season of the recent BBC "Reeves and Mortimer" remake of Randall and Hopkirk (deceased). I was very impressed with the first three episodes, and in particular the second episode - one scene of which had me crying with laughter. Unfortunately, when I came to watch some more of it last night, the second of the two discs turned out to be corrupted. Luckily I picked this up new rather than second hand so I was able to go and get it replaced today.

I'm reminded that this was a "sign of things to come" when the BBC agreed to make it - a sign that they were emerging from the Science Fiction dark ages and into the current position, reported by Paul Cornell at Concussion, where they're very receptive to being pitched serious science fiction shows, everything from Life on Mars to the forthcoming Jeckyll, via Dr Who and the Torchwood spin-off.

Oh good! Having said that, I hope they don't overdo it - it wouldn't take much in the way of bad choices to put things back the way they were.

From waht Paul Cornell said at Concussion, the "suits" at the BBC are now mostly people who grew up with Terry Nation's 70s shows (Survivors, Blakes 7...) Jon pertwee and Tom Baker as Dr Who, lots of kids' stuff like The Tomorrow People. Basically they're the people we "won the cultural war" with by getting them to see SF as a natural part of the milieu and not something weird and on its own. Hopefully we'll have a good crop of decent stuff and even when "fashion" moves on we'll still be getting a modest numbr of shows made instead of the terrible drought of the 90s at the BBC when it was pretty much Red Dwarf and that was it.

It's good to hear that there's a more positive response to science fiction, that's it's finally coming out of the woods and into its own. They may be some bloopers along the way but at least it's heading in the right direction. Hopefully we'll get a good bunch of shows, making television less of a scene of dread.
