Current Reading/Watching
Feb. 13th, 2022 05:03 pmSo I finished the Invisible Library. As noted by others, Book 8 finishes the main plot with the principle characters from the first book. The author has written that she has other ideas for stories in this world, but will be looking at other things first. I'll be interested to see what she does next, since the first of this series was her first published novel. An enjoyable series and a good denouement for the ongoing mysteries. Some myffic (Thanks, PTerry) incoherence going on, but that's completely in keeping with what's gone on before in this series (see book 2 and the Blood Countess).
On to the next, another (shorter) series that I've read earlier book before but which has a new (to me) entry to read. I'm currently reading Charlie Fletcher's "The Oversight" which is, so far, a triloy coming out quite slowly. I enjoyed the first and the second was not quite as good as I recall, but still decent. The best comparator I could think of to this is Suzanna Clark's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel. Later period (this is Victorian) but something of a similar feel to the urban/rural mythology clash. It's darker and grittier than S&N. My liking book 2 less might have been more because of my mood when I read it than the book itself, since I think I was going through a bad depression patch when I read it and it's not a happy-fun-time book.
Watching: as well as continuing to catch up on ST: Discovery I'm re-watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (plus Agent Carter at the appropriate points) with $DAUGHTER watching it for the first time. She enjoys the MCU movies and the recent Disney+ TV (though I haven't allowed her to watch the Netflix ones and may skip Moon Knight which is being touted as much more violent than recent MCU TV). I watched this through once but this is a first re-watch. It's quite re-watchable, with some good foreshadowing that I didn't necessarily notice when it paid off in the first place. Also noticeable that the first two seasons in particular tie in closely with the MCU movies of the time, but I think they stop that with season 3 where we are now and just mostly go with their own thing.
Watching The Book of Boba Fett with the family (one more ep to go tonight, probably). Eps 1-4 were their own thing but Eps 5/6 were basically The Mandalorian Season 2.5. Anyone enjoying the Mandalorian but who turned off or didn't watch Book of Boba Fett is going to be out of the loop when it comes to Season 3, I think.
