There was a Richter 7.9 earthquake 250 miles from the Eastern coast of Japan at 14:46 Japan time today. Tomoko and I are fine. Nothing significant wrong with the apartment.

Glad to hear you're okay.

According to the BBC it's been upgraded to 8.8, which is vast.

I hope everyone you and Tomoko know are safe.

Cheers.
http://www.oe-files.de/gmaps/eqmashup.html shows it as 8.9. This is very big indeed (for anyone reading this who doesn't know the Richter scale it's base ten logarithmic so 8 is ten time bigger than 7).
We're still getting aftershocks and secondary quakes. The bigest of these so far is listed online as 6.4 which is still pretty big. Lukcily they're still mostly off in the ocean so they're not as big on land.
The worst affected area seems to be Sendai in Tohoku region North East of Honshu. The airport there looks more like a seaport due to the tsunami.
This was the biggest quake I've been in and it wasn't a pleasant experience, I must say.

Glad to know you're OK. Your apato building is pretty new and I know the Japanese government is shit-hot on construction specifications and disaster preparedness. Still going to be a mess for a while.

That wedding I was thinking of coming to Japan for in May was going to be up in Matsushima on the coast near Sendai where the bride-to-be's family lives; I won't know for a while how they came through it. I expect it will be cancelled or at least postponed.

Thanks. I hope Dave's prospective in-laws are all OK. The pictures from Sendai are very scary.

They are indeed the scariest images I think I've ever seen. Watching a 500mph tsunami hitting land is something I thought I'd never see and the scale of destruction boggles the mind.

Keep safe.

Glad to hear you're safe. You were one of the first people we thought of here when we heard of the 'quake.
