7.9 Magnitude Earthquake Near Japan
Mar. 11th, 2011 02:43 pmThere was a Richter 7.9 earthquake 250 miles from the Eastern coast of Japan at 14:46 Japan time today. Tomoko and I are fine. Nothing significant wrong with the apartment.

Date: 2011-03-11 07:33 am (UTC)http://www.oe-files.de/gmaps/eqmashup.html shows it as 8.9. This is very big indeed (for anyone reading this who doesn't know the Richter scale it's base ten logarithmic so 8 is ten time bigger than 7).
We're still getting aftershocks and secondary quakes. The bigest of these so far is listed online as 6.4 which is still pretty big. Lukcily they're still mostly off in the ocean so they're not as big on land.
The worst affected area seems to be Sendai in Tohoku region North East of Honshu. The airport there looks more like a seaport due to the tsunami.
This was the biggest quake I've been in and it wasn't a pleasant experience, I must say.

Date: 2011-03-11 11:17 am (UTC)That wedding I was thinking of coming to Japan for in May was going to be up in Matsushima on the coast near Sendai where the bride-to-be's family lives; I won't know for a while how they came through it. I expect it will be cancelled or at least postponed.
