Internet Access in Prison

a_cubedDuring my Social, Legal and Ethical module I give a lecture on "Sex and Technology". Once of the things I discuss with the students is the European Court of Human Rights ruling that prisoners should be allowed access to "pornography", as part of their protected rights to freedom of expression.
A related story is report in The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/05/24/lag_internet_jail/) today with a policy group saying that prisoners should be given full internet access.
The Prison Service of course says that protecting the public from offenders' potential harm (online stalking, intimidation of witnesses etc) outweighs the positive benefits of internet access in rehabilitation.
