Oh well, official word of the second of three outstanding decisions on EU research proposals. Another rejection. Very disappointing this time in that we got 24 out of a possible 25 (you have to reach 18 to be considered funadable in an absolute sense) but the threshold for consideration in a relative sense, compared to other proposals in the same round, turned out to be 24.5/25. Still, it gives us a good base from which to try again in the early 2006 round of funding on this mechanism - much better than the other proposal we've had the results of which only got 20/25. The third one we've had unofficial word has failed but I'm still waiting on official confirmation and the evaluation forms for that one. C'est la vie.

Grant Rejections

It's very disheartening. At least I have had two grant proposals successful this academic year. One that's started (EU) and another that's due to start inOctober/Novermber (EPSRC). Then again I've been involved in ten proposals this academic year - Five EU, One KTP, Three EPSRC, One BBSRC. Three granted (one EU, one EPSRC, one KTP) five rejections (four EU and one EPSRC) with two still outstanding. Of the two outstanding, one has been through an "outline process" and so has about a 50/50 chance of success I'm told. So, in general, I suppose it's not a bad success rate. It's still disappointing to be told your stuff is very good, but still not good enough, but my success rate this year is very high, so I should look at the positive rather than the negative, I suppose.

This coming year I've got to concentrate more on doing the research and producing the output rather than making grant proposals. Got tog et my RAE profile improved :-(.
